  1. Flicking through the new Peter Claw book, there's a chronology at the stop.

In it, it says that LWTUA was released 18th April 1980. Must be a fault, I thought. So I had a look on Wikipedia, that also says April 1980.

Weird, so I had a look at the Centre and Soul box prepare, that also says April 1980 as a release date.

In fact, the but thing I can notice with the correct, June 1980 engagement, is the Factory Communications box set and, of class, the British Hit singles book.

What is going on? Has one piece of dodgy data ended up being copied and as a issue become an accustomed truth?

  2. IIRC, The single wasn't a striking on its release which might explain why the appointment in the Singles book is dissimilar. I think there was a sudden surge in its popularity following IC's death and information technology became a minor hit then. It and then re-charted in - I think - 1983 when information technology made top 20.

BTW, information technology reached #1 here in NZ in 1980. JD are still very large here....

  3. The single was starting time released later on Ian died, in June. I bought it the solar day it came out. I jut don't sympathize where this idea that it was released in April comes from, unless it's from the date on the label, which is unrelated to the release appointment.

The single was infact released earlier Ian's expiry. Here'south a good summary I fabricated for you from Discogs.com:

The 7" was commercially released in April 1980, the 12" followed in June 1980. The 12" was reissued in the UK 1983, 1984 and 1988.
The 12" comprehend photograph is a particular of the Ribaudo family unit tomb in the Staglieno Cemetery in Genova, Italy. The sculpture was made by Onaroto Toso.
    Side A version was recorded in March 1980 at Strawberry Studios, Stockport;
Side B version and These Days were recorded in January 1980 at Pennine Sound Studios, Oldham.

Where do yous get the info that the engagement on the label was unrelated to the bodily release date?
  6. "I merely have record shops left".
  7. Fantabulous enquiry on the labels and dates above, only I still hold with the others that the release was postumous. I have a vivid memory of the night John Peel announced on his testify that Ian Curtis had died, and I'yard virtually certain that LWTUA was released afterwards, regardless of the bear witness to a higher place. It would almost take been remarkable for the dysfunctional Factory to have recorded and released the March sessions in such a short space of time.
  8. Well, I recall that proves my point: the Internet is replacing fact with received wisdom.

The 45 definitely came out in June, later on Ian's death. I bought information technology on the Monday it was released, and got a copy of the Komakino flexi at the same time.

It went directly into the charts, due to the involvement arising from Ian'due south subside and the ensuing blanket coverage in the Britain music press.

Every bit to the characterization date, it must exist the date Peter Saville delivered the artwork to the label or something like. On the label for the Closer LP, the date is '9/5/80', and that'southward definitely not the release date either!

  9. According to The Bully Stone Discography, FAC 23-12 was a reissue released in October 1980.

Definitely, the single charted in the U.K. in June, July, and Baronial 1980.

  10. FAC numbers and dates were allocated in advance of release, for artwork, etc., so the dates were planned, just could be missed.
  11. For "could exist" you lot could easily substitute "would be". They were pretty shambolic in the early years. And the later years also!

I seem to take claimed Ian committed 'subside', not 'suicide'. Blame the iPad's spell check. :)

  12. Interesting, and frustrating, these box sets surely qualify as primary sources.

    Some other argument for June...

My question: was "Dear Will Tear Us Autonomously" the last song Curtis recorded? Might Apr exist the recording appointment?

  13. Information technology's not uncommon for "official" sources (in this case Peter Hook, Factory Records, etc.) to get release dates incorrect. Many famous groups rely on fan sites and other online sources to gather release information when they're putting together anthologies, etc. because their ain records/recollections are no longer reliable.
  14. What's even weirder near getting the dates wrong in the Peter Hook volume is that it's clear from reading information technology that he's a collector/hoarder and has kept anything he could get hold of Joy Division related.
  15. Willowman, I think that you are correct with June existence the release date.

My Center and Soul CD box lists the release date for Love Volition Tear U.s. Apart as UK: xiii (I presume 7"), 28/6/80 (I assume 12").

In the contempo Singles 1978-80 vinyl box fix, the rear sleeve of Beloved Will Tear Us Apart has FAC23 Factory Records, June 1980.

At the time of Ian's death both NME and Melody Maker were on strike. The outset British music paper to study the story was Sounds.
From Sounds May 31, 1980 "Joy Division had finished their new anthology, Closer. It'southward still coming out in a few weeks time, while the single Love Will Tear Us Autonomously is due whatsoever day now."

From the volume "An Ideal For Living" by Mark Johnson, published 1984.
"Honey Will Tear United states Apart b/w These Days & Love Will Tear Us Autonomously (ver.) (rec. Jan/Mar 80; seven", FAC 23, rel. dated eighteen Apr lxxx; 12", FAC 23.12, rel. dated 27 Jun 80): The first Joy Segmentation release following Ian Curtis' death was FAC23, later on issued (in the United States merely) on eighteen Apr 81."

Note "rel. dated 18 April 80" as opposed to actual release date.

    Hope this info helps.

  16. I was thinking the same thing well-nigh recording appointment. I accept a New Order/Joy Divsion discography book and will look this up later today.

I find it chilling that Ian's last concert was recorded and released on Yet. It makes the already dark and emotional music even more powerful.

  17. According to Truthful Religion: An Armchair Guide to New Lodge, Joy Division, Electronic, Revenge, Monaco and The Other Two by Dave Thompson, LWTUA was recorded in Jan 1980 (version i) and March 1980 (version two) and these two tracks along with These Days were released every bit a single FAC 23 on 28 June 1980 and re-released on 29 October 1983. The promo video was filmed on 28 April 1980.

The book does not say anything about the 7" coming out earlier than the 12" single, fwiw.
